The Affordable Care Act first enrollment period has now been over for a couple of months, which means many people are still trying to understand what exactly are the benefits their coverage provides. This past Tuesday, I had the pleasure of interviewing three individuals who played an important role in reaching out to and educating Latinos across the country about the ACA: Mayra Alvarez, Associate Director, Office of Minority Health at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS); Vanessa Gonzalez-Plumhoff, Director of Latino Leadership and Engagement at Planned Parenthood Federation of America; and Ann Marie Benitez, Managing Director of Government Relations and Public Affairs at the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NILRH). Our conversation centered around women of color, Latinas in particular, many of whom have unique health issues and have been historically and disproportionately underserved by the health care system.
