In the past year or so, cyber-misogyny and its many manifestations –trolling, rape and death threats, so called “revenge p*rn” and other forms of bullying against women — have become the topic du jour. Though the headlines tend to follow the latest scandal or trending topic, and many critics attempt to lessen the validity of harassment claims by hiding behind first amendment rights, for many women this is a horrible daily reality.
As the reports have increased, so have the number of groups and organizations working to fight back. This Friday, I will be hosting a tweet chat to discuss the difference between harassment and free speech, how online harassment disproportionately affects women over men, the specific challenges faced by women of color when it comes to this problem, resources for victims, and the strategic directions that should be taken in eliminating online (and ALL kinds of) violence against women once and for all.
